Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are a professional American baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. Also known as “The Sox”, the franchise has competed in the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League (AL East) for over a century. The Boston Red Sox have earned multiple MLB titles during their long tenure in the league, most recently, the 2018 World Series. The team calls the historic Fenway Park home and fans eagerly fill the stands to support the Red Sox during Home games.

Boston welcomed the team in 1901 and were known then as the Boston Americans. As an original member of the American League, they saw quick success placing second the very first year. The Boston Americans officially became the Boston Red Sox in 1908 and played their home games at the Huntington Avenue Grounds stadium before moving to Fenway Park in 1912.

The early Boston team prevailed over the competition finishing top three in 1901 and 1902, and then winning the league's very first World Series in 1903. By the start of the 1919 season, Boston had won six AL Pennants and 5 World Series titles. The Red Sox remained a dominant MLB franchise until becoming plagued by what is now referred to as the “Curse of the Bambino'', when team owner Harry Frazee sold the contract of future baseball legend and Hall of Famer, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees. Many believe that deal was what fueled the heated rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

Loyal fans regard the trade as the team’s turning point, marking the beginning of a more than 80-year championship drought. The Red Sox / Yankees rivalry is one of the most famous rivalries in American sports. The franchises regularly face each other and the games are often broadcast nationally. As Division rivals, the Red Sox and Yankees often meet in the playoffs drawing a lot of attention from fans and media.

Where do the Red Sox play their home games?

  • The Boston Red Sox have played at Fenway Park since 1912. In that time the park has undergone numerous cosmetic changes that have both increased and decreased seating capacity. Fenway Park was also home to multiple professional football teams like the Boston Redskins (now: Washington Football Team) and the Boston Patriots (now: New England Patriots). Fenway Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in early 2012 and is currently pending approval to become a “Boston Landmark”.
