Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are a professional National Football League team (NFL) in the American Football Conference’s Western Division (AFC West). Located in Denver, Colorado, the Broncos’ home games are played at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. Although the name changed (Broncos Stadium at Mile High, Invesco Field at Mile High, Sports Authority Field at Mile High), the Broncos are host to some of the most loyal fans in the NFL.

Home games sell-out each season as fans flock to Mile High Stadium to cheer on the team. Accustomed to success, the Denver area was branded “Broncos Country” and the love for the Denver Broncos became known as “Broncomania”. The Broncos were nicknamed “Orange Crush” in the mid 1970s after adopting the 3-4 defense. In 2015 the defense was so great that they dubbed themselves “The No Fly Zone”.

The Broncos were formed in 1960 and were one of the original American Football League teams. The team became part of the NFL in 1970 when the two leagues merged. Since then, the Broncos have won eight (8) AFC Conference championships and three (3) Super Bowl championships. The AFC West is also home to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Las Vegas Raiders, who are arguably Denver’s biggest rival.

The rivalry between the Raiders and Broncos spans over 50 years. Both teams were a part of the AFL where the Raiders proved the more dominant team. After 20 straight losses, the Broncos finally defeated the Raiders in the 1907s strengthening the rivalry. In the late 1990’s the Broncos won two Super Bowl championships (1997 and 1998) dominating the division and rivals.

The Broncos were led by Hall Of Fame quarterback John Elway during the back-to-back Super Bowl run. Originally drafted by the Baltimore Colts, Elway was traded to Denver in 1983 after threatening to leave football for baseball if he was not traded to a team of his choosing. With John Elway under center, the Broncos made the postseason six times, won five Divisional championships, won three Conference championships, and won two Super Bowl championships. Elway retired after the 1998 Super Bowl but continued to contribute to the team’s success as General Manager and the Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

Under Elway’s leadership, the team signed star quarterback Peyton Manning in 2012. Manning helped Denver win another four Division championships, two Conference championships, and Super Bowl 50, becoming the first starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl for two different franchises. Now, the Broncos have brought in another star quarterback in Russell Wilson, and hope to experience similar success this season.
