Los Angeles Angels

The Angels are an American professional baseball team based in Anaheim, California, part of Orange County and the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Angels compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The club has played its home games at Angel Stadium since 1966. The current MLB franchise was established as one of the league's first two expansion teams in 1961 by Gene Autry, the team's first owner. Autry was a famous singing cowboy actor in a series of films in the 1930s to 1950s, and later founded the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum.

The "Angels" name was taken by Autry in tribute to the original Los Angeles Angels, a Minor League franchise in the Pacific Coast League (PCL), which played in South Central Los Angeles from 1903 to 1957. He bought the rights to the Angels name from Walter O'Malley, the then-Los Angeles Dodgers owner, who acquired the PCL franchise from Philip K. Wrigley, also the owner of the parent Chicago Cubs at the time, as part of the Dodgers' move to Southern California.

Through 2020, the Angels all-time win-loss record is 4,735–4,753 (.499).

Where do the Los Angeles Angels play?

  • A stone's throw from Disneyland Park, Angel Stadium of Anaheim ("The Big A") is a gorgeous 43,250 capacity ballpark that feels distinctly Californian. Looking out beyond center field, bustling Interstate 5 sits below the Honda Center in the foreground (home to the NHL's Ducks), and a large waterfall fountain just over the fence shoots water and fireworks after every Angels home run. One of the easiest stadiums in baseball to drive to, Angel Stadium is home to top-notch American League baseball under the sunny Southern California skies.

What teams are in the Los Angeles Angels division?

  • The Angels are in the AL West division with the Houston Astros, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, and Texas Rangers.

What's the story behind their rivalries?

Their rivalry with the Los Angeles Dodgers is from the two teams being from the same region, with their home fields connected via the freeway system. Another rival, the Texas Rangers have had former players switch to the other team, which has played a role in their rivalry. More notably, Adam Kennedy of the Texas Rangers and Gerald Laird of the Los Angeles Angels also got into a fistfight. The Los Angeles Angels rivalry with the New York Yankees has led to heated games, especially during the playoffs.
