The New England Patriots are a professional American football team, competing in the National Football League. The Patriots play their games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is 22 miles Southwest of Boston. The team was founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots, competing in the American Football League. In 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL merger, the Patriots joined the NFL and changed their name to the New England Patriots. Upon joining the NFL, the Patriots began playing in the AFC East Division, which they are still a part of today.

Throughout the last 20 years the Patriots have been the NFL’s dominant force. Led by the head coach and quarterback duo of Bill Bellichick and Tom Brady, the Patriots won six super bowls. (an NFL record, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers) The Patriots also hold the record for the most Super Bowl appearances, with eleven. Nine of those featured Brady and Bellichick. The Patriots recently had a streak of eleven straight division titles, but it was snapped this previous season by the Buffalo Bills.

Last year, the Patriots selected Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the 15th pick in the NFL draft. Jones, who Bellichick envisions as the successor to Brady, enters his second season after clinching a playoff berth in his rookie year.
