The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional basketball team that competes in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Western Conference. The Pelicans play their home games at Smoothie King Center. The team was established in 2002 when the Charlotte Hornets relocated to New Orleans. In 2013 they renamed themselves the Pelicans.
The Pelicans enter this season with high expectations, looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2018. The Pelicans hired Willie Green to take over as head coach. Green won two championships as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors and most recently helped lead the Phoenix Suns to the NBA finals, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks. Green takes over for Stan Van Gundy, who was only the coach for the previous season. After trading Anthony Davis in 2019, the Pelicans have stocked up on young talent which looks to take the next step forward. 2019 first overall pick Zion Williamson is the team’s best player. Williamson is coming off his first career all star appearance, and looks to continue to impact the game in each and every facet. Williamson is primed to become one of the league’s best players, and has consistently improved since his debut. Brandon Ingram serves as the Pelicans secondary source of scoring. The 2016 number two pick has improved his shooting since arriving in New Orleans, living up to the hype he came out of Duke with. The team acquired Devonte Graham from the Hornets, who will provide scoring depth, and Jonas Valanciunas from the Grizzlies who will help with defense and rebounding. Former first round picks Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Josh Hart, and Jaxson Hayes look to improve and become consistent contributors. The arrival of Willie Green and continued development of Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram gives the Pelicans hope of contending.
