North Carolina Tar Heels

The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team represents the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. The Tar Heels basketball team was established in 1910 and has competed in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) since 1953. North Carolina plays its home games at the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The arena is named after former coach Dean Smith, who won two national championships with the Tar Heels. North Carolina has made fifty-one NCAA tournament appearances. They have reached the final four twenty times, and won six national championships. North Carolina has produced significant NBA talent, around one hundred players. The impressive list includes Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Sam Perkins, Antawn Jamison, Rasheed Wallace, Walter Davis, Bob McAdoo, Rick Fox, James Worthy, Kenny Smith, Brad Daugherty, Ty Lawson and many others. The Tar Heels are currently coached by former player Hubert Davis. Davis was the Tar Heels shooting guard from 1988 until 1992, and was a first round pick in 1992. Hubert played twelve NBA seasons, averaging 8.2 points per game throughout his career. Davis had been an assistant coach for the Tar Heels since 2012, receiving a promotion after Roy Williams retired. Williams is a hall of fame coach who led North Carolina to three national championships. In eighteen seasons with the team, Williams only missed the NCAA tournament twice. Last season, Williams led North Carolina to an 18-11 record, earning an NCAA tournament bid as the eight seed in the South bracket. The Tar Heels, however, lost to Wisconsin in the first round. 2021 All-ACC freshman Caleb Love is returning to this season. He is going to be supported by a freshman class that features two four star recruits in Dontrez Styles and D’Marco Dunn. Despite the retirement of Roy Williams, the improved depth and return of Caleb Love has North Carolina set up to contend in 2021. The North Carolina Tar Heels look to advance past the first round of the NCAA tournament in Hubert Davis’ first season as head coach.
