Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates are an American professional baseball team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Pirates compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. Founded as part of the American Association in 1881 under the name Pittsburgh Allegheny, the club joined the National League in 1887 and was a member of the National League East from 1969 through 1993.

The Pirates are also often referred to as the "Bucs" or the "Buccos" (derived from buccaneer, a synonym for pirate). The team plays its home games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh's North Side, its home since 2001. The Pirates previously played at Forbes Field from 1909 to 1970 and at Three Rivers Stadium from 1970 to 2000. Since 1948 the Pirates' colors have been black, gold and white, matching the other professional sports teams in Pittsburgh, the Steelers and the Penguins.

The Pirates have won;

  • Five World Series championships
  • Nine National League pennants
  • Nine National League East division titles
  • Three appearances in the Wild Card Game

Where do the Pittsburgh Pirates play?

  • Located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh just east of the Allegheny River, PNC Park has been home to the Pirates since 2001. It's known for its retro look and its gorgeous views of the Pittsburgh skyline, not to mention its intimate dimensions. With a capacity of 38,362, PNC Park is one of the smallest ballparks in baseball. There are two food courts in the stadium and shops along General Robinson Street that can be accessed from inside PNC Park. After the game, you can take a stroll on the Riverfront promenade just outside the stadium.

What teams are in the Pittsburgh Pirates division?

  • The Pirates are in the NL Central division with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, and St. Louis Cardinals.

The five-time World Series champs have been a staple on the Pittsburgh sporting scene for more than a century. After back-to-back trips to the Wild Card Game, the Pirates fell short of the postseason in 2016-18. Growing pains aside, the team, adjusting to life after Andrew McCutchen (now with the Philadelphia Phillies), boasts some marquee performers in Gregory Polanco, Starling Marte, Josh Bell, Corey Dickerson, Francisco Cervelli and hurler Chris Archer.
