The Seattle Kraken are an American professional hockey team that competes in the National Hockey League. The Kraken were founded in 2018 and began play this season. In December 2018, Seattle was awarded the 32nd NHL franchise. The team chose the nickname “Kraken” in July 2020. The Kraken will play their home games at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle Washington. The arena was formerly the home of the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics before their relocation to Oklahoma City. In 2019, the arena was renovated to accommodate the needs of an NHL franchise. Climate Pledge is also the first zero-carbon arena in the world, as it is powered by renewable energy. The Kraken open their inaugural season with pretty strong expectations. The Kraken were allowed to build their team via the same format as the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, allowed to choose one player from every team (except Vegas) in the expansion draft. The roster was assembled by NHL legend Ron Francis, who was hired to be Seattle’s General Manager in July 2019. This summer, the team hired Dave Hakstol to be their first head coach. The Kraken selected captain Mark Giordano from the Flames to headline their expansion draft. The 38 year old won the Norris Trophy for the best defenseman in 2019. The Kraken was also able to poach forwards Jordan Eberle and Yanni Gourde from the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning respectively. The Kraken boast a formidable goaltending unit, perhaps the best duo in the league. They drafted Chris Dreidger from the Carolina Panthers, and signed Phillip Grubauer in the offseason to a massive six year deal. The team also signed Jaden Schwartz. The Kraken were given the opportunity to build a deep roster for their inaugural season. The team hopes to follow in the footsteps of the Vegas Golden Knights, and make a deep playoff run in year one.
